The Israeli military says it is investigating the source of a YouTube video of Israeli soldiers in performing a choreographed dance while on patrol the West Bank city of Hebron.
The clip begins with six soldiers in full battle dress, pointing their M16 rifles in various directions, as the sound of the Muslim call to prayer goes out over the rooftops.
Then, they freeze, and then break into a synchronized dance to the song Tik Tok by American pop star Ke$ha.
The Palestinian news agency Ma'an queried the Israeli military about the video. "The item in question was a joke carried out by soldiers. The matter is currently being examined by the battalion commander," the army said in reply.
"Palestinians in Hebron who complain that the Israeli soldiers patrolling the southern West Bank city rarely intervene to stop settler violence may now know why," reported Ma'an.
The center of Hebron, the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank, is under heavy occupation by Israeli forces deployed there to protect compounds of Israeli settlers. According to the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem, "Israeli law-enforcement authorities and security forces [in Hebron] have made the entire Palestinian population suffer in the process of protecting Israeli settlement in the city."
