World-famous pop star Tarkan was taken to the Beşiktas courthouse in Istanbul on Monday along with nine other suspects detained for their alleged links with two drug dealers who have been monitored by narcotics agents.
Tarkan Tevetoğlu was taken to the courthouse with the nine other suspects in three vehicles at 9:15 on Monday morning. After the detainees arrived at the courthouse, the press was ushered away from the courthouse, and the suspects were taken to a closed car park outside the police department.
Co-chairman of the German Green Party Cem Özdemir said he was shocked by the news and did not believe Tarkan would take or be in possession of drugs. “I was extremely upset when I heard the news; Tarkan is very important for Turkey and has played a big part in promoting Turkish music and culture across the world,” Özdemir said Tuesday in a statement to the Doğan news agency.
“As someone who knows Tarkan well, I do not believe he has been associated with cocaine,” Özdemir said.
Tarkan was arrested last Thursday after narcotics police found 12.5 grams of marijuana during a narcotics raid at the pop star’s home in Istanbul.
