Spanish police say they have detained an alleged Serbian "war criminal", wanted for over 100 killings during the 1992-95 Bosnian war. Veselin Vlahovic was arrested on Monday near his home in the town of Altea, south-eastern Spain, as part of an investigation into a group carrying out burglaries, the interior ministry said. Vlahovic is wanted on three international arrest warrants, including one for genocide for the "killing of over 100 women and children, rapes and torture" during the conflict. A police statement issued on Tuesday said he was known as the "monster of Grbavica", a reference to the Sarajevo suburb where he is alleged to have carried out his crimes. He is also wanted in Spain for robbery and assault with a firearm. Vlahovic, who was born in Montenegro in 1969, was said to be carrying fake Bulgarian identity documents at the time of his arrest. His arrest comes as Radovan Karadzic, the wartime Bosnian Serb leader, stands on trial before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague, and follows the arrest of Ejup Ganic, an alleged Bosnian war crimes suspect, in London. | |||
