Rockefeller Center Tree Lifted Into Place

Even though it’s only mid-November, the Rockefeller Christmas tree was hoisted into place today.

The city's most famous tree is a giant Norway spruce that was cut down from a farm in Mahopac, N.Y. yesterday.

Crews will soon begin stringing the 12-ton tree with thousands of LED lights, attached to five miles of electrical wire. A 550-pound Swarovski crystal star will top the 74-foot show stopper.

It was a gift from Peter Acton, a New York City firefighter and September 11th first responder. He said the tree has been on his Putnam County property for years.

"Obviously [the tree was on my property] way before me. I've only been there for 11 years. Trees, they're everybody's trees. Enjoy, New York. It's not my tree, it's everybody's tree," said Acton.

People around Rockefeller Center say the towering spruce is a sign the holidays are upon us.

"It's the start of the holiday season, it means everything for the new year and for Christmas," said one passerby.

"It's almost Christmas time," said one young New Yorker. "And Santa's coming."

The tree will be lit on November 30 and will stay lit through January 2.
