Drug courier hides drugs in private parts of body !

Bulgarian Sofiya Georgieva, 21, was remanded in custody after she was apprehended at the Malta International Airport (MIA) two days ago trying to smuggle into the country 200 grammes of cocaine, which she hid in 10 capsules in private parts of her body.

Mrs Georgieva arrived on a flight from Girona, Spain, where she has been residing for the past two years. On her behalf, legal aid lawyer Mark Busuttil told Magistrate Lawrence Quintano that Mrs Georgieva was instructed to take a one way flight to Malta, hand over the drugs to someone and use some of the money to take an immediate flight back to Spain.

Dr Busuttil said Mrs Georgieva had agreed to carry out this task because she was told that Malta is a very lenient country when it comes to the possession of drugs.

Prosecuting Police Inspector Dennis Theuma and Dr Busuttil both agreed that Mrs Georgieva was evidently duped into believing this, so much so that the accused not only arrived in Malta with a sum of just €60, but also left behind her credit cards.

Assisted by a Bulgarian translator, Mrs Georgieva pleaded not guilty to the charges of importing and being in the possession of the drugs which denote that they were not for her exclusive use, and also asked the court to consider the fact that she is the mother of a child whom she left behind in Spain.

Taking into account that the accused has no money for bail release, Magistrate Quintano said that he was left with no option but to remand Mrs Georgieva in custody, but ordered her case to be put off until early next week so that a solution can be found in earnest to accommodate both parties.
